The new .dk model — how to choose a registrar
What changed?
Punktum dk remains the registry for every .dk domain. It maintains the authoritative register and sets the rules for .dk. A registrar handles registration, renewal, payment, and day-to-day administration for the registrant.
Since 1 July 2026, new .dk domains can only be registered with registrar management. Existing domains still managed directly by Punktum dk can use the transition period until 30 June 2028 and must choose a registrar by then.
Punktum dk says it will decide how to handle any remaining registrant-managed domains after the transition period. That statement does not support claims that a domain will automatically be deleted, become impossible to renew, or be assigned to a random registrar.
Source: Punktum dk’s announcement about the administration model, checked 22 September 2026.
In short: If Punktum dk still manages your existing domain directly, choose a registrar by 30 June 2028. If a registrar already manages it, the transition does not force you to move.
A registrar is not the same as a DNS provider
Changing registrar is an administrative change. If the existing nameservers stay in place, the current DNS zone normally continues unchanged.
Changing DNS provider or nameservers is a separate technical migration. Copy and verify the records before changing the delegation. Otherwise, the website and email can become unavailable even when the registrar transfer itself succeeds.

Compare like with like
A first-year promotion is not directly comparable with an annual renewal price. Check whether VAT is included, whether the offer is a domain-only product or a hosting bundle, and whether managed DNS is included.
The figures below come from each provider’s public pages and were checked on 22 September 2026. Prices, localisation, and packages can change, so the quote shown in the provider’s own checkout is decisive.
| Registrar | New registration / first year | Annual renewal | Basis of comparison | DNS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Domænehajen | DKK 100 | DKK 91 | VAT included. Domain only. Transfer is free | No managed DNS. You can use external nameservers |
| Simply.com | USD 1.15 promotion (USD 12.67 standard price shown) | USD 15.23 | Transfer is free. Check the localised basket for tax treatment | DNS service, DNSSEC, and a DNS API are described as included |
| DNS by echo reply | DKK 99 | DKK 99 | Danish VAT included (DKK 79.20 excluding VAT). Domain and DNS for that domain’s own zone | 25 records and 10,000 monthly queries included. Queries continue above the allowance but may be rate limited |
Simply.com’s public list currently shows separate promotional, standard-registration, and renewal figures in USD. Its site can localise currency and promotions, so verify the final amount and tax treatment in your own checkout instead of converting an advertised price yourself.
Domænehajen states that its public prices include VAT and separately lists registration, transfer, and renewal. Both providers allow domains to use external nameservers; confirm the nameserver choice in the transfer flow. The echo reply price shown above matches the public price on this site. The live product displays the current quote before checkout.
You can also use Punktum dk’s registrar list. It is a directory, not a price guarantee. Check the chosen registrar’s own product and price information before ordering.
DNS by echo reply
DNS by echo reply is designed for teams that operate DNS as a controlled service. A domain registered through the platform includes DNS for that domain’s own zone without consuming the account’s normal zone allowance.
The included zone contributes 25 records and 10,000 queries per month. Queries continue above the allowance but may be rate limited. They are not described as automatically blocked or billed as overage. Each eligible account can also have one free Basis zone without a domain registration. Additional Basis zones currently cost DKK 37 per year including Danish VAT (DKK 29.60 excluding VAT).
The platform includes DNSSEC, team roles, and an audit trail. Anycast DNS and GeoIP routing are not currently available.
What should you check?
- First year and renewal: Is the low price only an introductory promotion?
- VAT: Is tax included in the displayed amount?
- The product: Are you buying only the domain, managed DNS, or a hosting package?
- Nameservers: Can you keep your current DNS provider?
- DNSSEC: Does the provider support signing and correct DS handling?
- Access control: Can staff use named accounts and appropriate roles instead of shared credentials?
- Evidence: Is there useful change history and an export for audits and incidents?
- Leaving later: How do you obtain an authorisation code, and is there a transfer fee?
How the registrar change usually works
The exact process varies, but for an existing .dk domain managed directly by Punktum dk you will normally:
- choose an approved registrar
- sign in to Punktum dk self-service and generate an Auth-ID
- provide the domain and Auth-ID to the chosen registrar
- follow the transfer status until the new registrar is confirmed
- verify the nameservers separately
Punktum dk states that its Auth-ID is valid for 14 days. Treat it like a password. If you are also changing DNS provider, copy and verify the zone first, then change nameservers as a planned migration.
